The Light That Leads UsSince 2023
Honoring Benjamin Through Purpose
Benjamin’s Story
Benjamin Matthew Fischer came into this world on December 22, 2015. Though his time with us was only six short years, his presence left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him.
Early Challenges and Diagnosis
Benjamin’s life began with difficulties. He spent time in the NICU at birth and faced many hurdles early on. It quickly became clear he was globally developmentally delayed and often in severe discomfort, though the cause was initially unknown. After many rounds of genetic testing, Benjamin was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder called Alpha Thalassemia X-linked Intellectual Disability Disorder Syndrome (ATR-X).
Life with Complex Needs
Benjamin was non-verbal and had limited mobility, with complex medical needs requiring constant care. His days were filled with numerous appointments, surgeries, therapies, and hospital stays. He attended physical, occupational, speech, and vision therapy both at home and at outpatient clinics, including the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. At three years old, Benjamin started attending the Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children, which became a supportive and positive environment for him and our family.
A Light That Shone Bright
Despite his many challenges, Benjamin radiated a loving light that touched all around him. His easygoing disposition, loving nature, and bright smile brought joy and warmth even during difficult days. He showed us the true meaning of strength and peace through his gentle spirit.
How Benjamin Changed Us
Raising Benjamin meant rethinking life itself. We learned to slow down, prioritize differently, and appreciate the simple moments. His journey brought exhaustion and heartbreak, but also profound growth and new perspectives we wouldn’t trade for anything.
Saying Goodbye
On April 13, 2022, Benjamin passed away peacefully in his sleep. His death was unexpected, as his progress had given us hope for more time. Losing him was the deepest sorrow we have ever known.
“Light must come from inside. You cannot ask the darkness to leave; you must turn on the light.”
— Sogyal Rinpoche
What Drives Us
Carrying His Legacy
Benjamin’s spirit, love, and wisdom continue to inspire us every day. Though his body was limited, his soul was boundless — teaching us about resilience, love, and the power of stillness. We honor him by sharing his story, carrying forward the lessons he taught us, and shining a light for others facing similar journeys.
